Japan may remove support for rice farmers

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has a history of retaining payments to specific interest groups, so this is a significant departure from their typical policies.

Domestic agriculture has lagged the industrial sector in adopting new technologies and the current subsidy and quota program have kept small inefficient farms competitive for years as many in the country argue that removal of the program will lower food costs to consumers and reduce government expenses.
