New cattle breeding indexes expected by end of year

Two new cattle breeding indexes are set to be rolled out by the end of the year, if industry leaders can agree on the details of how they will be implemented.

The first is a dairy-beef index that aims to identify the beef bulls that will be most suitable for dairy farmers to use on their cows towards the latter half of the breeding season.

Teagasc geneticist Donagh Berry said that it is possible that the index will be live by the end of the year.
