Price collapse costs farmers €1.7m a week

Bull beef finishers are receiving €1.7m a week less for their stock than they did this time last year.

Figures from the Department of Agriculture for the first two weeks in March show that beef export plants are now paying finishers of prime young bull beef between €250 and €300 per head less than they did in March 2013.

Latest statistical returns for the sector have confirmed that the decline is across all grades, but up to 30pc more severe for O and P grade animals, than the better stock grading U or R.
