Reducing unemployment with agriculture

The unemployment rate has escalated to over a fifth of the population in the past few years. The high rate of unemployment in Nigeria has become a perpetual and significant problem in the country, as evident in the increase in crime rate, amid other problems.

Nigeria has a large expanse of arable land, a diverse climate that supports variety of crops and a large workforce. These are some of the conditions that make agriculture viable, and which have the prospect of increasing job opportunities in the country.

In Nigeria, the agricultural sector currently absorbs about 70 per cent of the labour force, half of the proportion that contributed more to the GDP about 15 years ago.
