Shops reject 25pc of potatoes for being too ugly

Ugly spuds are proving a blight on the finances of farmers, as supermarkets reject up to a quarter of produce because of their looks.

Many big chains believe that fussy shoppers will not buy less-than-perfect produce, so growers are asked to supply only good-looking vegetables.
