                    Purpose
The Pirbright Institute carries out research on a number of important viral diseases of swine such as those inducing classical swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever and influenza.The Porcine immunologist post is aimed at strengthening fundamental research capability in the field of pig immunology and analysis of immune responses to these important pig viruses within both the Livestock Viral Disease (LVD) and Vector Borne Viral Diseases (VVD) programmes. These programmes focus on major infectious viral diseases affecting the health, trade and human safety of mammalian livestock including cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, and carry out novel scientific research towards a better understanding of virus-host interactions of viral diseases and better control methods through improved tools (vaccines and diagnostics) and intervention strategies (disease resistance and outbreak management).  The programmes are based at Pirbright, where new state-of-the-art high containment laboratories are under construction. The Pirbright Institute maintains three inbred lines of pigs and international reference laboratories which monitor the global occurrence and characteristics of transboundary viral diseases in order to identify threats and select vaccine strains.
The post holder is expected to contribute towards developing The Pirbright Institute as a major International Centre for immunology of viral diseases of pigs by establishing external collaborations and securing additional research funding. Initially, the post holder will develop viral immunology of pigs as a discipline to strengthen research in the immunology of swine influenza virus. However, the post-holder can also establish collaborations with groups working on other virus infections of pigs within the Institute to strengthen the immunological studies.

Responsible for:
• Developing a world-class research portfolio on the immunology of viral infections of pigs, focusing initially on the immunology of Swine Influenza Virus in pigs
• In collaboration with others, establishing projects that complement work being done elsewhere and make use of the unique resources of The Pirbright Institute
• Delivering against targets agreed with BBSRC/DEFRA as part of the Institute Science Strategy and in accordance with IAE requirements
• Establishing collaborations with national and international research groups working on the immunology of virus infections of pigs.
• Interacting with staff within The Pirbright Institute and outside for establishing research collaborations and securing additional grant funding.
• Developing and managing a research group including all issues pertaining to health and safety, biosecurity and biosafety, home office license requirements, quality assurance, staff training, staff career development and supervision of PhD students

This job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. Salary & Allowances
The starting salary for this post will be £35,282 - 37,534 dependent upon relevant qualifications and experience.

- The Employee must not live on any premises where any cloven hoofed animals are kept, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or deer, and must not visit any premises where such animals are kept within three days of entering the restricted area of the laboratory, or within five days of entering the restricted animal accommodation.

- Where disease agents of birds and other domestic animals are being studied specific restrictions to contact with these species may apply off site/ at home. Such restrictions will be applied on a case by case basis subject to on the individual’s work portfolio and access to relevant facility areas. In case of poultry and horses it may require 3-5 days of no contact after handling/having contact with these pathogens and materials potentially carrying these agents.
