Accurate tagging and sheep records vital ahead of EU inspection
The NFU is urging all sheep farmers to ensure they are up to date on the current rules on tagging sheep ahead of an EU inspection of the UK tagging system in the New Year.
If the UK is unable to show accurate traceability and farmers do not show accurate knowledge of the current system during the Food and Veterinary Officer's (FVO) inspection, UK farmers will be required to adopt new EU sheep tagging regulations in July.
If the new system is introduced farmers will be required to double tag their sheep and a paper based recording system for every individual animal will be introduced requiring the recording of every individual sheep movement. NFU Cymru believes this measure would be totally unacceptable and would damage the Welsh sheep industry as well as the rest of the UK.
NFU Cymru President, Peredur Hughes, said: "It is vital that all sheep producers understand and adhere to the current 'R' and 'S' tag system. While this system poses some challenges, failing the FVO in the New Year will leave us with just seven months to adopt a far more complicated and onerous double tagging system.
"If members are unsure about any aspects of the current system, whether it involves the application of baseline tags, movement tags or replacements, they need to get in touch with the NFU or NSA (National Sheep Association) as quickly as possible. It is vital for the industry as a whole that we pass the FVO and are allowed to keep the current system."
