Biggest ever bean boat bound for Egypt

Egyptians housewives are set to receive the largest single load of human consumption beans ever sent from the UK.

Gleadell Agriculture loaded 14,000 tonnes of beans from the Immingham Dock last week. The MV Magdalena Green sailed on December 2nd destined for the Nile Delta.

Managing director Jon Duffy said: "Gleadell and our farmer customers have achieved a double first with the consignment. As well as being the largest cargo of beans to leave the UK for a human consumption market, the vessel is also the first to be loaded in bulk straight from farm."

Human consumption beans are usually bagged up by processors before export. However, Mr Duffy believes the opportunity for such a significant bulk tonnage of beans to be exported could not be missed.

"The Egyptian market demands a very specific quality standard, which was met by our farmers. Sourced from farms throughout Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk beans are a valuable source of cheap protein for the North African market, especially during and after Ramadan," said Mr Duffy.
