Traditional Bramley apple pie filling has been awarded protected status by the European Commission after it was accepted as a uniquely British product.

And now the appetising pie filling has been awarded the same food protection as Gloucester Old Spot pork, Stilton cheese and Scotch beef by the EU.

The recipe, a blend of fresh Bramley apples, sugar and water, has been awarded protected status by the European Commission.

The Bramley apple dates from the 19th century and was first exhibited by London's Royal Horticultural Society in 1876, the Commission said.

The list was set up in order to assure the reputation of regional products, promote traditional and agricultural activity and ensure inferior products cannot be benefitted unreasonably. The designation is good news for Bramley apple farmers, as it is thought to place a premium on their product.
