CIWEM secures recertification for management system
The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management has successfully achieved recertification of its environmental management system (EMS) to the internationally recognised ISO14001 standard.
CIWEM is one of a small number of professional bodies to operate an independently accredited EMS and the only chartered environmental body to do so. The system of continual improvement helps the Institution to reduce its environmental impacts on an ongoing basis and cut costs. In 2010 CIWEM reduced its carbon emissions by over 11% after signing up to the 10:10 initiative.
At a time when many organisations and businesses are turning their attention away from environmental concerns because of financial and economic pressures, and are pursuing growth at any cost, CIWEM continues to believe that good environmental management means better business practice that also saves money.
CIWEM’s Executive Director, Nick Reeves, OBE said: "We are very proud to have our certification to ISO14001 renewed. This demonstrates CIWEM’s ongoing commitment to ’practice what we preach’ and lead by example. We have reached the point where we are setting more ambitious targets for continuous improvement to our performance. CIWEM is the only chartered environmental body to hold this accreditation. We believe that many more professional bodies can and should operate a formally accredited EMS - particularly those who profess to share a concern for the environment. I challenge them to do so."
