CLA taking Sheep EID Campaign to Westmorland Show

In a week when a threat to the UK sheep industry has made the news through the publication of a report by the CLA and the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association clarifying the case against the proposed introduction of electronic sheep tagging (EID), followed by a declaration at the EU Parliament by a group of MEPs calling on the commission to make the scheme voluntary, the CLA is continuing its campaign by taking its petition against the scheme to the Westmorland County Show.

Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North said; "Since we launched the petition in June we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received, and not just from within the industry. When the implications of scheme are explained to the general public at shows, they too cannot see any benefit and are shocked by the additional costs. Everyone is very supportive of our petition, signing either on our Stands or online."

Visitors to the Westmorland County Show on 11 September can sign the petition on stand C56, They will also be able to meet the CLA's regional advisers, the CLA Deputy President William Worsley and the CLA Conservation Adviser Claire Collyer, as well as land management experts from Carter Jonas, and Roger Wright of the Highways Agency, who will be providing advice on trailer towing legislation.

The petition is also online at www.cla.org.uk
