MOUNT SIDNEY, Va. - An Augusta County man has been charged with stealing five cows from a local farm, then trying to sell them at a livestock market.

Sheriff’s authorities charged 26-year-old David Fitzgerald of Fort Defiance with one count of grand larceny in the theft of the red-and-white Hereford cows from Edward Sheets’ farm in Mount Sidney. The cows are worth an estimated $5,000.
Sheets says he discovered his cows missing Friday morning, then saw that they were on the auction block at Staunton Union Stockyards.
