Canada-Meat recall extended.

CANADA-MEAT RECALL EXTENDED.

Piller Sausages & Delicatessens Ltd. has expanded its recall of meat products.

The Waterloo company is now recalling all packages of the following products with best-before dates of June 8 or earlier:

The Lean ’N’ Tasty product did not test positive for listeria bacteria, said Piller food safety director Peter Stein.

But it went through the same slicer at the Golden Valley Farms factory in Arthur that was found to have contaminated some of the Taste Better Than Bacon products with trace amounts of the germs.

Piller began the recall Tuesday after Canadian Food Inspection Agency tests came up positive.

No one is known to have fallen ill from the meat products, which are supposed to be cooked at a temperature high enough to kill the bacteria.

Listeriosis, the disease caused by listeria, is a dangerous form of bacterial infection, especially for the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Infection in pregnant women can cause stillbirth or complications.

At least 20 Canadians died of listeriosis last year after eating tainted lunch meat and sausage from a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

For more information, consumers can call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at 1-800-442-2342 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday.
