Carbon footprinting in spotlight - farming conference
Lower carbon farming is still a major priority of Britain’s biggest retailer, producers will be told later this month at a conference organised by Dairy UK in partnership with DairyCo.
Recession has not dented the strong move towards more efficient food production, delegates at Dairy UK’s Carbon and Farming conference on 22 June will hear.
In the run-up to the event, Tesco Agricultural Manager Emma Jones said that the supermarket was still committed to becoming a ’zero carbon’ business by 2050 and reducing supply chain emissions by 30% over the next decade.
"In particular, the carbon footprint of agricultural production is going to be a major target for the industry in the future," she said.
She is just one of the key speakers at an event designed to put carbon footprinting for farmers squarely in the spotlight. She will be joined on the podium at the Sixways Stadium in Worcestershire by Pierre Gerber, author of the new report on greenhouse gas emissions from dairy published by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.
Dr Gerber has proved one of the most influential critics of the dairy and livestock sectors in the past.
Delegates will also hear Bill Parish, Defra’s second in command of the Climate Change Mitigation for Agriculture and Food Chain Programme, explaining the value of carbon footprinting.
Industry speakers including John Allen of Kite Consulting and Michael Masters of Agri assist will explain the real benefits that dairy farmers can reap from practical carbon footprinting.
