Compass celebrates a fruitful season with 100% English apples and pears
Compass Group UK is celebrating the best of the English apples and pears harvest by sourcing 100 percent of their apples and pears from the UK during October and November when the season is providing the best quality produce.
Over the October-November period, more than 1.5 million apples (210,000 kilograms) and 240,000 pears (36,000 kilograms) will be served by Compass in workplaces, schools, hospitals and sports and leisure venues across the UK.
England’s world-renowned fruit orchards are abundant with good quality apples and pears at present. The varieties sourced by Compass in the UK include Royal Gala, Braeburn, Cox and Bramley and pear varieties are Comice, Concorde and Conference.
Compass buys its apples and pears directly from the orchards and then distributes them across the UK. Some of the orchards¹ include: Cotswold Orchards, Adrian Scripps Ltd in Kent, Hill Farm Orchards in Hampshire and Peake Fruit in Essex.
Adrian Barlow, Chief Executive of the trade organisation English Apples and Pears, said: "We applaud Compass for this commitment to English apples and pears. It is important that the major players in the industry, who have such strong purchasing power, support locally-grown produce. Compass is leading the way in the food service sector and we value their support."
Christine Forder, Lead Buyer for Compass Group UK & Ireland said: "Compass is celebrating the delicious varieties of English apples and pears by sourcing fruit only from the UK. We strongly believe in purchasing and promoting produce that’s in season and we have committed to buying only English apples and pears across our 7,000 client sites when they are at their best."
