EU suspends farming aid to Bulgaria amid fraud suspicions
The European Commission has suspended more than 100 million euros (153 million dollars) in farming aid to Bulgaria while suspicions of fraud with EU funds were being investigated, Agriculture Minister Plamen Oresharski said Friday in Sofia. The suspended funds were intended for the farming in Bulgaria, which has been facing increased competition since the country joined EU in 2007.
The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) was investigating a suspected fraud in the import of agricultural machinery from Germany in 2006. The machines were brought in used, but declared to be new.
Agriculture subventions to Bulgaria would resume after the case is cleared, Oresharski said. EU planned to aid Bulgaria's farmers with 160 million euros in 2008, after 220 million in 2007.
