Efra support is a ‘step nearer’ to Government removal of red tape

The CLA today said the Efra Committee’s report into the findings of the independent Farming Regulation Task Force is a step nearer to the Government’s removal of pointless bureaucracy in agriculture.

The Association said the support from Efra over the review of Defra’s farming and food related regulations was welcomed by the industry and suggested the Department’s staff experience rural businesses first hand to ensure the red tape recommendations are implemented.

CLA President William Worsley said: "The Task Force has done an excellent job at listening to stakeholders and conveying the frustrations of land-based businesses to the support of the Efra Committee.

"Cutting the mountains of paperwork and recognising the importance of online communications are key to the war on red tape, and will make rural businesses more economically viable."

Mr Worsley added the concept of "earned recognition" was particularly welcome.

He said: "The idea that regulators should reward rural businesses for taking steps to maintain high farming and environmental standards without government interference is a welcome change designed to make these businesses try even harder."

The CLA President supported Efra chair Anne McIntosh’s view that Defra needs an internal cultural change in its approach to regulation and enforcement.

He said: "The recommendations of the Task Force must be implemented promptly while ensuring Defra changes its attitude to farm businesses. Staff dealing with farming and food must be allowed to get out there and experience it first hand. The CLA has lots of members who would be delighted to let Defra employees get their hands dirty."
