Farmers face bill for tackling animal diseases
MOVES to make farmers contribute towards the cost of dealing with animal diseases appeared to come closer at the weekend.
UK Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said it would mean that they would have more of a say in dealing with problems like bird flu, foot-and-mouth disease and bluetongue, all of which have seriously disrupted the industry this year.
"That is the direction in which we want to move," he told ITV1's The Sunday Edition.
"In those circumstances is it unreasonable to ask the farming community to bear more of the cost of taking the decisions to deal with animal diseases?"
