Farmers' forum targets animal health



Roger Evans, new Chairman of the UK Dairy Farmers’ Forum, has called for action to find ways of stopping the importation of cattle diseases.

Mr Evans, who farms in Shropshire, was elected Chairman of the Farmers’ Forum at a well-attended meeting in London last week. Rex Ward, a dairy farmer from Cornwall, was elected Vice Chairman. Both men will take a seat on the main Board of Dairy UK.
The Forum also agreed to promote work aimed at eliminating duplicate farm inspections and vigorously debate a number of other farming issues.

Roger Evans said: "The issue of importing costly animal diseases like Bluetongue and Johne’s is of critical importance to the whole dairy supply chain. There are already some efficient measures in place to stop disease spreading in the domestic market, such as DairyCo’s Cattle Purchasing Checklist. We will now initiate further talks with other bodies, including DairyCo, to find new ways of tackling the problem of importing disease from overseas. This could include the establishment of a herd health status card."

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Evans continued: "This marks a new beginning for a revitalised Farmers’ Forum, with the best turn-out we’ve had for a long time. We intend to represent a rigorous and proactive farmer voice to the Board of Dairy UK and are looking forward to tackling key issues."
