Farmers want swifter action on red tape - NFU
Government plans to cut the amount of red tape in the farming industry is good news but farmers want to see swifter action, said the NFU today.
The Government’s full response to the Farming Regulation Task Force sets course for a better regulated and trusted industry, recognising good practice and promoting a better understanding of business across Defra and agencies. ’’
Defra’s response sets out plans to reduce burdensome regulation and promote a change of culture within government. It proposes to give greater recognition for high performing farm businesses (such as those in farm assurance) by targeting inspections to more risky businesses and reducing paperwork for all by building a better understanding of agriculture in policy making.
NFU deputy president Meurig Raymond said: ’This response is good news for the farming industry, but we also recognise that the industry must play a full part in this process. The NFU made a significant input to Richard Macdonald’s Task Force, and we are pleased that so many of our principles can be found in Defra’s response.
’However, many farm businesses will be disappointed with the slow speed of delivery in the 10 months since the Task Force report was originally published. Farms will be looking for regulatory burdens to be evidently lifted as soon as possible. We had hoped for an implementation plan but have instead an Implementation Group, now is the time for action.
’Farming’s experiences of previous de-regulation commitments have not bred confidence that businesses, as opposed to regulators, will benefit from these proposals.
’But now is not the time for cynicism, this is the best chance of achieving a better regulated industry and supporting productive, profitable farming. So the NFU will be working with Defra Ministers and officials to lead with action across government departments and in the EU. We will support the report’s implementation and continue to play a full role, actively promoting action within the industry.’
