Free farm advice for cleaner water

Leaflets are going out to more than 100 farmers around Bassenthwaite Lake offering free help with new legislation to protect farmland and the environment.

The loss of soil, slurry, manure and chemicals from agricultural land into streams and lakes contributes to water pollution. Under the new European Water Framework Directive all industries, including agriculture, will need to reduce harmful emissions.

Bassenthwaite is one of the area’s shallowest lakes, currently suffering sediment and pollution problems. High rainfall, steep mountains and prominent farming and forestry industries have led the area to be chosen as one of only four pilots in England for a three-year Catchment Sensitive Farming project.

CSF officer Karen Austin explained leaflets had been produced to help farmers understand

changes that will be taking place and to encourage them to take advantage of free, locally-based, advice and assistance.

“We want to let farmers know we are here to help them understand and meet necessary changes in the legislation,” said Karen. “Although other industries are affected by the Water Framework Directive, my role is to help guide farmers.”

Karen explained that often only small changes were needed on farms to meet the new requirements, which will lead to a positive impact on the environment and further protection for Bassenthwaite Lake.

“Hopefully farmers will read the leaflets and see that I am here to assist, whether in completing Soil Protection Reviews or helping apply for funding to carry out any capital works,” she said.
