Frome's annual Cheese Show could well change its name to Frome Cattle Show!
Entries for this year’s show, which takes place on Saturday, September 10th, has attracted a record number of entries and puts it among the leading one day shows in the country.
A total of 403 cattle will be competing for awards, with entries coming from farmers and breeders from every South coast county from Kent to Cornwall as well as from Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and other counties around the country, with many cattle being entered into more than one of the 190 plus classes the show is to feature.
Last year, itself a record year, 352 cattle paraded before the judges but numbers have been boosted this year with the addition of new classes and the return of the Dairy Shorthorn cattle. In all, there are classes for 25 pure breed cattle and 41 commercial cross breeds, with BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson judging a further class which has attracted 28 native breed cattle with its own section.
Tony Page, the show’s Cattle Section Chairman, is delighted with the response.
’The total number of entries is fantastic and with 126 exhibitors bringing potentially award winning cattle from as far away as Kent and Cornwall it underlines just how important winning at Frome Show has now become,’ he said. ’The show has long been one of the most important one day events in the region ’ this year we will certainly be among the best in the country.’
The cattle will be housed under cover in three separate marquees at the centre of the Showground’s Livestock Village which has become one of the most popular attractions at the Show, with visitors and exhibitors crowding round the judging rings where sheep and goats will also be on show during the day.
Tickets bought in advance of the show, which takes place at the West Woodlands Showground on Saturday, September 10th, attract a generous 30 percent discount and with these now available from more outlets than ever before it’s never been easier to save money.
’On the day’ prices are ’12.00 for adults and ’3.00 for children between five and 15 with a family ticket, for two adults and two children, costing ’25, itself a significant saving, but family tickets bought in advance cost just ’18.00. Senior citizens can save ’3.00 by buying their tickets in advance too ’ they cost ’7.00, ’10.00 on the day.
Tickets are available from Tourist Information Centres in Frome, Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster, Melksham, Shepton Mallet, Bath, Wells and Mere and from Mole Valley Farmers, White Row Country Foods at Beckington, Woody’s Farm Shop at Norton St Philip and Acres Garden and Aquatic Centre at Corsley.
