Good support for Bishops Castle Auction's Christmas Fastock Show

Bill Gittins won the Perpetual Challenge Cup for the champion pen of lambs at auctioneers Halls’ annual Bishops Castle Auction Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale today.

Despite a lifeless commercial trade, the show classes were well supported, particularly the best pair of butchers lambs, which produced an overall average of 169p per kilo.

The show categories were expertly judged by Glyn Page, representing Farmers Fresh and Mr Gittins, of Swinbatch, took the champion’s cup with 45 kilo lambs that sold for £100. Reserve champion pen of lambs for the Bill Hart Cup went to G. M. Hudson & Sons, Mainstone for 41.5 kilo lambs that sold for £79.

Class winners were: Best pen of 10 or more lambs to 37 kilos: 1, G. M. Hudson & Son; 2, B. Williams, Hill End. Best pen of 10 or more lambs 44 kilos: 2, W. R. Gittins; 2, R. Corfield, Upper Mill. Best pen of butchers lambs: 1, M. J. Davies, Choulton; 2, G. M. Hudson & Son. Best pen of 10 or more lambs 37.5 kilos to 43.5 kilos: G. M. Hudson & Son.

Leading prices were: 249p per kilo for 38.5 kilo lambs, 213p per kilo for 37.5 kilo lambs and 191p per kilo for 42.5 kilo lambs, all from M. J. Davies, Choulton; 222p per kilo for 45 kilo lambs, W. R. Gittins; 200p per kilo for 40 kilo lamb, 195p per kilo for 37 kilo lambs, 195p per kilo for 37 kilo lambs and 190p per kilo for 41.5 kilo lambs, all from G. M. Hudson & Son; 184p per kilo for 44 kilo lambs, R. Corfield, Upper Mill; 184p per kilo for 43 kilo lambs, B. Williams, Hill End; 183p per kilo for 35 kilo lambs, N. A. Turner, Upper Pantglas and 183p per kilo for 41 kilo lambs, R. L. Roberts, Kempbrook.
