The merger of Express and Arla is a vital step forward for the UK milk industry said Express Milk Partnership (EMP) chairman Jonathan Ovens following approval this week (15 October 2003) by the Department of Trade and Industry.
In a statement issued on behalf of the EMP board, he said the producer organisation supplying Express Dairies was fully supportive of the merger and was delighted that the new company would soon be up and running.

"This is a significant step forward because it provides much needed rationalisation in the milk processing sector, and that should ultimately be of benefit to all UK producers and the wider industry.
"The merged businesses will be a leading supplier of fresh liquid milk and cream and have the advantages of added value products and strong brands in its portfolio.
"I believe it will be a real boost to the sector to have such a strong business working with UK dairy farmers for the greater good of the industry."
The new company will be known as Arla Foods UK plc and will begin trading under its new name on 23 October 2003.
