Monmouthshire council left in no doubt of feelings of local farmers
Monmouthshire County Council were left in no doubt about the strength of feeling amongst local farmers regarding the future of the county's livestock market after a packed meeting organised recently by NFU Cymru.
NFU Cymru County Chairman, John Biggs, chaired the meeting held at Alice Springs Golf Club, Usk, where over a hundred Monmouthshire farmers listened to County Councillors, Council officers, local auctioneers and Farming Union representatives discuss the future of the livestock market in Monmouthshire.
Mr Biggs said, "Local County Councillors should be in no doubt about how strong local farmers feel about the importance of a livestock market in the county following the meeting. What was obvious from the meeting was that there is overwhelming support for a new market to be situated in the centre of the county and it is essential for local farm businesses that there is a smooth transition from the existing site to the new one."
Mr Biggs added, "It is essential that decisions and plans are finalised as soon as possible so that work can begin on a new site. Agriculture is the foundation of Monmouthshire's economy and we call upon the council to do all it can to support the industry."
