NFU calls for Dairy industry cohesion to prevent future milk price cuts



The NFU has warned any further cuts in milk prices to dairy farmers in the wake of yesterday’s swingeing cut in the Arla milk partnership price could put the future of Britain’s dairy industry in jeopardy.

It has called on all sections of the dairy industry to pull together to resist further milk price cuts and is holding urgent talks to decide the best way forward.

NFU dairy board chairman Gwyn Jones said: “There is no future for a dairy industry which continues to squeeze producers. Dairy farmers will vote with their feet and milk production will drop leading to inefficient processing plants and job losses. The whole sector needs to stand together to resist retail pressure.

“If retailers and processors want farmers to invest for a future in dairying then they should ensure they are offered the incentives now to do it. The industry must pull together to deliver some positive news or face a crisis for milk producers.”
