NFU meets with Tenant Farmers Association
Protecting future interests of tenant farmers was top of the agenda when the NFU met with the Tenant Farmers Association.
NFU Deputy President Meurig Raymond attended the meeting to explore areas where the two organisations could support one another in best protecting the interests of tenant farmers.
Discussion centred on the Single Payment Scheme, agricultural tenancies and bovine TB.
Mr Raymond said: “Following on from the close work that has gone on between the NFU and the TFA on SPS the next step was to investigate how we could build on this. The meeting provided a useful opportunity to explore the issues facing the tenanted sector both in the short term and in the longer term.
“On CAP reform it was clear there are areas where rents will need to be looked at carefully to ensure that a viable future will exist. The recent dip in land let is a concern, and one which we will work on to ensure opportunities for new entrants to agriculture can continue.
“I hope we are able to lobby more effectively on issues affecting tenants and can ensure the tenanted sector has a sustainable and thriving environment in which to continue. I look forward to working more closely with the TFA in the future on areas where our policies are aligned.”
