New President for the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society

At their recent Annual General Meeting, the Members of the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society elected Mr John Pigott as their President for 2006.

John is the third generation of the Pigott family to farm at Thrales End in Harpenden. The family started farming in the area during the early 15th Century. Since taking over the farm from his Father at the age of 19 years, John has seen great changes in agriculture and farming techniques.

In 1963, John married Jessie Clark, a dairy farmer's daughter from Kimpton.

John and Jessie have three children and five grandchildren. Their son Ian now farms in partnership with his them. The farming business comprises 1,700 acres of arable land with great emphasis placed on the environment and conservation.

John has been involved with the Herts County Show (organised by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society) since 1972. He has risen through the ranks from standing 'knee deep' in mud as a junior Car Park Steward, to the elevated position of President in 2006.

John commented: "I am extremely proud to be associated with the Herts

County Show. When I first became involved it was a one-day livestock event for farmers. The Show now offers a weekend of fun and education for the entire family, and at the same time, maintaining a focus on farming and agriculture. It has been pleasure to witness the increased community interest in what is now clearly established as Hertfordshire's premier outside event, and I am really looking forward to presiding over the 2006 Herts County Show
