New feed supplement increases cow output after turnout
A new formulation for Buta-Cup energy supplement for dairy cows from Ufac-UK has been carried out to increase the C16 fatty acid levels, raise the energy content by 2MJ per kg DM and to provide a more efficient supply of palmitic acid than straight C16 products.
Formulated for feeding as part of a complete diet, or for inclusion in compounds or blends, Buta-Cup has been designed to raise butterfat and milk yields and improve fertility in high-performing diary cows. "With a continued decline in fertility in the UK dairy herd, this increase in energy level is particularly important," commented Dr Donald Lawson Ufac’s UK sales and marketing manager.
"The particular blend of fatty acids is high in C16 to raise butter fat in the milk and increase yields. The blend of oils is selected to ensure the maximum digestibility of the C16 fatty acids."
He points out that a dip in butterfat levels is a perennial challenge when cows are turned out to grass. The high oil and sugar levels in grazing grass, together with its low fibre content affect rumen function and depress butterfat production which can have a significant economic knock-on effect under most milk contracts.
Buta-Cup, a free-flowing, dust-free meal has a slow-release base to ensure maximum utilisation without causing metabolic disturbances. It also contains slow release glucose to enhance the cow’s liver function.
Typical feed rate is 0.4-00.6 kg per cow per day and this can increase yields and butter fat by 2 litres and 0.4 per cent respectively.
