New secretary General for AMTRA
The Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA) has today announced the appointment of Stephen Dawson as its new Secretary General from September.
Educated at Ipswich School in Suffolk, Stephen then studied at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, where he gained a degree in Natural Sciences, being awarded a BA, then an MA, specialising in chemistry, with modules in cellular biology. In 1995 Stephen joined the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH), where he has been closely involved in all aspects of the organisation’s day-to-day operation.
As NOAH Technical Executive his roles have included representing NOAH members in matters of UK and EU legislation, providing guidance to stakeholders, acting as a key NOAH contact with the VMD, creating and disseminating technical and regulatory policies, together with maintaining communications between NOAH and member companies. The role also included representing the UK animal health industry on the IFAH-Europe Technical and Regulatory Committee, providing support to the Company Secretary in many aspects of corporate governance and supporting the NOAH Code of Practice Committee.
Stephen, who is married and lives in London, commented:
"My 14 years with NOAH have provided me with a good knowledge of the animal health industry, involved a close working relationship with AMTRA and developed the skills, experience and adaptability to manage AMTRA efficiently. I am delighted to be taking on this exciting new challenge and believe that my experience of working with AMTRA’s key stakeholders, including the VMD, will further contribute to a successful transition to new leadership for the organisation.
"The embedding of SQPs within the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and the increasing professionalism of the industry represent a major step forward.
However, key challenges remain, notably continuing to develop the CPD system and other areas where fresh input may continue to improve the service which AMTRA offers. We must also be mindful of the fact that threats to the SQP profession from potential changes to EU legislation still remain."
Bob Stevenson, Chairman of AMTRA, added: "Personally, and on behalf of all members of AMTRA Board, I am delighted to welcome Stephen as Secretary General.
We look forward to working with him in further securing the crucial role of all SQPs and in perfecting the MAH sales staff award. Stephen’s expertise within the animal health industry, together with his detailed knowledge of legislative and regulatory affairs both in the UK and the European Union, combine to provide the ideal background for this important position."
AMTRA is the independent regulatory body which is tasked with ensuring that the marketing and distribution of animal medicines in the UK is undertaken in a responsible manner by Suitably Qualified Persons (SQPs), whose professional register it maintains. The Authority also holds and maintains the professional Register of Marketing Authorisation Holders (MAH) sales staff.
