Organic farmer scoops top award
Elfyn Davies from Carmarthen, South Wales has been named the winner of the Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative (OMSCo suppliers) ’Farmer of the Year’ award.
Elfyn fought off stiff competition for the coveted award which recognises best practice in organic dairy farming. Following a thorough analysis of the entries, Elfyn Davies received the OMSCo Farmer of the Year Trophy and a cheque for £500.
This year’s Farmer of the Year award was judged on performance in the following four areas: animal welfare, environmental commitment, energy saving and local sourcing of stock feed.
Collecting his prize and unique milk churn trophy Mr Davies commented, "I’m delighted to have won the OMSCo’s 2009 Farmer of the Year Award. Organic farming is not just my livelihood but my passion too so it’s a real honour to have been chosen.
"Organic farming is a way of life – we all need to embrace the concept of farming with nature not against it. I intend to spend the prize money on planting some new native hedging which will help to attract more wildlife to the farm."
Peter Savidge at OMSCo said: "The standard of nominated farmers was exceptionally high this year; it was a tough job deciding on which most deserved to win. We were very impressed with Elfyn and felt he deserved the recognition. He has made a huge contribution to organic dairy farming and works hard to maintain the highest organic integrity and ethics."
Established in 1994, OMSCo has over 500 members making it the UK’s largest and longest established organic milk supplier co-operative.
