Planning proposals will boost rural economy - CLA

The CLA today said Government planning proposals to simplify the process of transforming agricultural buildings into homes is a much-needed boost for rural economy.

Farmers could soon be able to convert barns for residential use without specific planning permission in a move put forward by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

After calling on the Government to reform the planning rules on barn conversions for over a decade, the Association said it welcomed the proposals which will provide a much needed boost to the rural economy.

CLA President Harry Cotterell said: “We all recognise the urgent need for more housing across all our villages and rural areas, so we welcome the government proposals set out in this consultation.

“This gives more flexibility to an entrepreneurially-minded farmer to make the best use of his or her property.

“Clearly there are restrictions on the use of these new rights and farmers will need to think very carefully when deciding whether to rely on them.”

He added: “Nevertheless the consultation is silent on a number of important matters so we look forward to working closely with the government to achieve the right outcome.”
