Potato Council to host stand at Potato Europe

Potato importers and growers looking to buy seed from Britain are invited to visit the Potato Council stand at Potato Europe in Tournai, Belgium, September 7-8.

This is an ideal opportunity for importers to discuss the benefits of buying seed from Britain with seed growers, exporters and industry specialists, according to Potato Council head of seed and export, Mark Prentice.

This year, seed importers will benefit from the choice offered by exporters exhibiting on the Potato Council stand, which will be the one of the biggest at the event.

’Importers really appreciate the consistent high quality and health of Scottish seed potatoes,’ says Mr Prentice. ’Exports have seen a phenomenal growth over the past five years and this year is expected to be a record.

’This is largely due to the professional approach shown by the seed growers to producing the right quality for the target market. We have pride in providing customers with the varieties they need to grow.’

Potato varieties have been specially developed for overseas customers, taking account of particular growing conditions and consumer tastes ’quality British seed is now successfully grown in markets as distant as Asia and South America.

Additionally, Scottish Government representatives from Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA) will be on-stand, offering expert impartial advice.

Scottish seed potatoes receive a minimum of three government inspections, two in the growing crop and a final tuber inspection that takes place after harvest. This year’s first inspection has already started.

’We also work closely with the authorities in the importing countries, helping smooth the path to ensure supply consistency,’ continues Mr Prentice. ’Importers can have confidence in quality and delivery times, which helps them create and maintain sustainable enterprises.’

In addition, those seeking extra protection can look to the Safe Haven voluntary certification scheme that follows strict protocols to ensure the very highest standards.

’Potato Europe is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to meet with the experts and discuss their seed requirements ’ we look forward to welcoming you to our stand.’
