Frame manufacturers and building contractors who are members of the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA) now have another string to their bow.

The organisation has teamed up with FASET, the trade association and training body for the safety net rigging and fall arrest industry, to offer its corporate members the opportunity to become qualified experienced net riggers in the agricultural and small to medium-sized industrial buildings sector worth more than £2 billion.

The move is designed to further reassure farmers and clients who have a responsibility under Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations to use a contractor competent in health and safety.

RIDBA’s corporate members, who erect more than 100 buildings each week, already work to their own Code of Practice so the FASET link-up is further evidence of their commitment to raising standards in the field of framed building construction.

Employees of RIDBA members can now be booked onto a one-day FASET net rigger training course, which if successfully completed, will entitle the worker to a RIDBA trainee net rigger card valid for one year.

After at least six months they will then be assessed on site to GSA 1 standard, and if successful, will be entitled to a RIDBA experienced net rigger card valid for five years after which time they would have to repeat the entire process.

More than 50 years after its launch, RIDBA claims to be still the only association in the UK with detailed knowledge of the function and environmental requirements of modern agricultural and industrial buildings and their siting, planning, design and construction.

RIDBA secretary Tony Hutchinson said: "We are delighted to have secured this agreement with FASET. Many clients find it difficult to assess the health and safety competence of a contractor. Adding the FASET training and assessment to our own Code of Practice is intended to make it easier for them."

FASET secretary Tony Seddon added: "We are equally delighted that an association such as RIDBA recognises the benefits of being associated with the high standards represented by our organisation."
