Re-assess late summer grazing to boost 2004 lamb crop

Sheep producers are having to re-assess late summer grazing quantity and quality in order to ensure ewes are in the best condition for tupping.

According to Chris Willett from Pre-Tup Tub feed supplement specialist Dallas Keith, the hot weather has burnt off swathes of grass in some areas, particularly in the south and east cereal heartlands.

"Cereal farmers are focused on harvesting right now, but those with sheep need to keep one eye on their grass acres too to make sure they can provide the necessary nutritional boost in the run up to tupping," he points out.

"Some of the more traditional livestock areas in the west of the country have also suffered, so it's important to assess the position on your one farm and take action accordingly to prevent lower than average lamb crops next year."

Ewes need to be on a rising plane of nutrition prior to tupping to ensure maximum numbers of eggs for fertilisation. Where pre-tupping pastures have been burnt off significantly, he advises introducing an energy and protein-based, vitamin and mineral supplement as soon as possible.

"Using a specialist, pre-tupping supplement such as Pre-Tup Tubs is important because the product compensates for any shortfalls in grass energy and protein, as well as supplying the important trace elements required for optimum fertility," Chris Willett says.
