Richman brings new outcross bloodlines
Dairy farmers who are tiring of using bulls related to Goldwyn, Shottle and Durham have a new outcross from these bloodlines to bring added variety to their herds. The bull ’ Kings-Ransom P Richman - is a son of Potter, a bull that was a top seller in the USA producing robust daughters that suited large, commercial units, but was used far less in the UK.
Richman’s dam is similarly unusual in being a granddaughter of Lord Lily and Mandel, the latter being another leading bull of his day which was unavailable to British farmers.
But the main attraction of Richman is his own outstanding index, topped by one of the highest Type Merit scores in the UK at 3.21, which ranks him in the top 15 of all available bulls.
Among this top 15 he is also one of the highest for transmitting weight of milk, earning a PTA (Predicted Transmitting Ability) of an impressive 478kg.
Of particular note in Richman’s linear type profile are the outstanding udder characteristics he transmits to his daughters which are also robustly built yet with dairy quality. Long lifespans, low cell counts and ease of calving are further strengths while the fact that he has the lowest stature score (at 1.6) amongst this top 15 is a clear indication that his daughters have earned his high type index on the strength of their correctness and quality.
Bryan Challenor from World Wide Sires UK who market the bull says: ’Richman daughters are not over tall, they are thicker set than some and they have fantastic udders.
’These are exactly the qualities required on the big dairy units in the USA, and are increasingly what commercially focused UK farmers are demanding.
’In fact, I’d describe them as a bit like Oman but with better overall type and fantastic udders, and I can see them standing the test of time in the commercial environment.’
