The agricultural sector is to be given the chance to have its say, and influence the way its industry communicates, in one of the biggest independent consultation exercises undertaken in the rural sector.

The Royal Agricultural Society of England is to focus its activities on ensuring the agricultural sector, and the rural business community as a whole, have the relevant and credible platforms on which to share knowledge and better communicate business opportunities to build a stronger future.

A key part of the new focus is to take the Royal Show and linked technical farming events under direct management by the Society, dissolving its two-year partnership with Haymarket Exhibitions.

A wide-reaching consultation is planned with members, the Society’s myriad of stakeholders, and the industry as a whole, to establish how farmers, landowners and rural businesses can best understand new business opportunities, and receive the information they need to adapt to them.

“For over 160 years, the Society has acted as the independent voice and facilitator for the agricultural and rural sector, “said Thomas Wheatley-Hubbard, chairman of the Royal Agricultural Society of England.

“The Royal Show, confirmed for 2007 as taking place from Sunday July 1 to Wednesday July 4, has in recent years changed with the industry to become the platform best-placed to promote and debate new opportunities in agriculture and the rural community,” said Mr Wheatley-Hubbard. “But it should be remembered that the ‘Royal’ and its embedded conference programme is just one part of a range of activities the Society carries out in serving the sector.

“We want the Royal Agricultural Society of England to deliver to the industry the enduring platforms of choice for policy-makers and opinion-formers to set out their vision of the future of farming. We want also to demonstrate throughout our activities best and emerging practice as well as encouraging innovation and promoting scientific advance.”

Using feedback from the industry-wide consultation, the Society will ensure it continues to deliver a first-class programme of shows, events and other communication activities. The Society will aim to encourage the uptake and application of good science, promote best business practice, emphasise sustainability and link closely with education to foster understanding and a sense of pride in the English rural economy.

“We are keen for everyone in the industry to get involved and help us shape the future. Our experience of working with partner organisations and our ability to draw together diverse views and opinions puts us in the ideal position to help steer the agricultural sector towards a successful future,” concluded Mr Wheatley-Hubbard.
