Rural Development - the way forward
The switch from production to environmental payments begins in 2005, with the CAP reform. It is therefore essential that Wales' share of pillar 2 funds increases to ensure that rural development, agri-environment, agri-food, and farm adaptation measures are adequately funded from Europe.
Speaking from the Conference held in Caernarfon, Peredur Hughes, NFU Cymru President said: "As we approach the funding round for the Rural Development Regulation post 2007, it is essential that Europe gives a real priority to rural areas in the overall Commission budget. In line with the NFU's European manifesto, I urge all farmers to strongly lobby their prospective MEPs on this issue to increase the UK's share of rural development funds."
Mr Hughes added: "I was also pleased to hear Oliver Drewes, Chief Adviser to the European Commissioner on Rural Development, pledge their commitment to simplification and reform of the delivery system.
"The key question is how much money will be spent on wider rural development and how much on specific farm initatives in the future, particularly if funds are limited.
A profitable and thriving farming industry is the key to securing the future of Wales' rural areas," explained Mr Hughes.
