South Korea-Court give US beef go ahead.
SOUTH KOREA.
CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RULES ON US BEEF.
The Constitutional Court of South Korea, rejected an application signed by 96,000 concerned citizens, calling for a ban on imports of beef from the Unites States on Friday.
The petition filed in June of this year, expressed concerns over the risk of BSA being spread to humans by the importing on US beef. The court ruled that any such move would breach the constitution of South Korea, and be contrary to the World Trade Organization policy.
Last year South Korea briefly resumed imports of American beef, only to ban it again for breaches in health regulations.
The ban was taken off again in May of 2008, however since that time US beef exporters have been found guilty of 13 breaches in the health requirements of South Korea. Meat sales resumed again on July 1, leading to mass demonstrations in the streets and a lot of anti American sentiment came to the surface.
The American beef imports must now be from cattle under the age of 30 months, in accordance with the new ground rules that have been laid down by the governments health department
