PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet yesterday ordered a study on productivity-based incentives for farmers, breeders and fishermen.
This followed a proposal by the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry to introduce an incentive scheme nationwide.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the proposal, if implemented, would lessen the burden of farmers, breeders and fishermen who were finding it difficult to cope with the rising cost of food production.
Muhyiddin said Malaysia had not reached self-sufficiency in terms of agriculture and agro-based production.
"Consumption of vegetables and meat is increasing considerably every day but the cost of production endured by farmers, breeders and fishermen is much higher.
"We have received complaints from associations that their members could not cope with the rising costs.
"The cabinet wants us to study the mechanism to decide on the quantum of the incentives. In principal, it has agreed with our proposal.
