Thousands of acres of publicly-owned farmland in Lincolnshire could be sold off to housing developers.
More than 250 holdings owned by the county's biggest council are under threat following a 400 per cent rise in land values over the past decade.
Tenant farmers renting the farms from Lincolnshire County Council are sitting on prime development land which will be considered for development over coming years.
That suitable for building could be sold for up to £400,000 per acre - 80 times its value as agricultural land.
The council has decided to consider selling off farms when they become vacant.
Some would be swallowed up by bigger agricultural businesses. Others would go for development, if planning permission is granted.
The council has denied that it will mean the loss of Lincolnshire's agricultural tenancies by stealth.
