Weeds threaten yields in backward oilseed rape crops

Cleavers, thistles and mayweeds all pose a serious challenge to yield in backward oilseed rape crops, according to Dow AgroSciences.

"With high oilseed rape prices it is worth protecting yield against the serious yield robbing weeds," warns Rene Pollak, broad-leaved crops specialist at Dow AgroSciences. "Mild conditions are ideal for controlling them with Galera (clopyralid and picloram); though application must be made before green buds appear above the crop canopy."

There is a narrow window to apply Galera in spring. However, warmer, more even temperatures mean it will perform well provided leaves are dry and there is sufficient drying time

"Ideally, allow plants to dry off in the morning then spray in the afternoon," says Mr Pollak. "However, growers should ensure heavy rain is not forecast after spraying to avoid the risk of product washing off weeds or water-logged soils."

Galera should be applied at 0.35L/ha in 200 litres of water using a medium quality spray. Applications can be made until the green buds start to show above the crop, but cannot be applied after GS 3.5.
