Welsh Cobs reach record prices at Royal Welsh Cob Sale

Record prices were once again achieved at this year's annual 3-day Royal Welsh Cob sale, held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Bulith Wells this weekend (14,15,16th of October, 2005).
This year's sale featured over 750 breeding stock and a further 100 performance animals were offered for sale by Brightwells Auctioneers, with a gross sale total of £682,630.
The event is regarded as the largest auction in the world of registered Welsh cobs Section D, Welsh ponies of cob type section C and their part breds, and again attracted hundreds of buyers from all over the world.
With an international following, a total of 34 animals were sold for export, attracting buyers from Germany, Holland, Norway, Sweden, France, Denmark, Belgium, finland, Netherlands, Norway and the Czech Republic with a total of 34 animals sold for export.
Terry Court, Joint Managing director of Brightwells Auctioneers commented "A sale of such scale with all vendors being paid up members of one society is truly unique" "The Welsh Pony & Cob Society Royal Welsh Cob Sale must be the envy of the horse and pony world".
Section D Bay Mare, Tarebigge Estelle proved to be the star of the sale, commanding the record price of £17,000, beating last years top bid by £4000. Sold by Mrs Clare Willis-Burton and bred from a line of show winners to Robert Manship on behalf of an unnamed client.
The highest ever priced foal in the sales history, Section D Bay Filly Fronarth Telynores Goch, of the well renowned Fronarth stud, Aberystwyth was sold for a staggering £12,000 to Stuart and Carol Crutchley of the Caerddaniel Stud, West Midlands.
Meanwhile the Welsh breeds commanded the limelight at the acclaimed Horse of the Year Show Birmingham (12-16th October). Rotherwood Take a Peep (Welsh Part bred mare) owned by Mrs P Sowersby of Cheshire took Champion in the Open
Cuddy Supreme in-hand Championship, with Mrs D Lynes's Moelgarnedd Derwyn (Section B Colt) taking the title of Reserve Champion Pony of the Year, and Frongoch Cardi (Section A Stallion) owned by Mrs A Jones of Dole Aberystwyth taking 4th position both of which were produced by Colin Tibbey.
Section D Mare Nebo Miss Maple from Nebo Stud Llanon was placed 2nd in its class in the Cuddy's supreme in hand, and honoured with the title of being the best turned out animal in its class. Also, the chestnut Stallion, Felinmor Triple Crown ridden by Carol Isacc and owned by Mr K Spencer also came to the fore claiming 4th place in the Mountain & Moorland section.
Commenting, Welsh Pony and Cob Society Chief Officer Gian Fazey Koven, said, "Were absolutely delighted by the standard of the animals at this years Royal Welsh Cob Sale, the record prices achieved this weekend along with our success at the Horse of the Year Show reinforces that the Welsh breeds are recognised as one of the most important breeds in the World!"
