A new scheme to provide customers with assurance of the quality of wild venison from Scotland has approved more than 50 suppliers in its first three months' existence.
Launched by Rural Affairs Minister Ross Finnie at the Royal Highland Show, the Scottish Quality Wild Venison Assurance Scheme has approved 52 producers and one processor, scheme chairman Ian Forshaw announced today. In addition, five more producers and two more processors have applied for approval.

"This is excellent news for consumers of wild Scottish venison," said Mr Forshaw, who is also head of business development at the Forestry Commission Scotland, one of the first approved suppliers.
"As more suppliers and processors receive approval, consumers will find it easier to find and buy venison products with the assurance that everything possible has been done to ensure the product's quality all the way from the hillside to the dinner table.
"This includes ensuring the welfare of the deer, the hygiene and food standards involved in the handling, transporting, butchering and storage of the meat, traceability of the meat through the supply chain, inspection standards, notification procedures and record keeping.
"It is also good news for people such as gamekeepers, stalkers and others, often in fragile rural communities, whose livelihoods depend on the market for wild venison.
"In these health and quality-conscious times, this quality assurance scheme raises the profile, both here in Scotland and in the wider British and overseas markets where it is sold, of what is already a natural, healthy, low-fat, virtually organic food product. I would urge other suppliers and producers to come forward and apply for scheme approval, to the benefit of all - themselves, the people on the hill, and the consumer."
Scottish Gamedealers' and Processors' Association chairman Leo Barclay added,
"Our association is very supportive of this scheme, because a number of our retail customers now want to supply quality-assured meat."
