Williams secures debate on sheep EID
Ceredigion’s Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams will next week lead the charge against EU plans to introduce a new electronic system of tagging for sheep, which farmers fear could cost them thousands of pounds.

The Westminster debate will give MPs the opportunity to quiz a DEFRA Minister on the plans. A delay in the implementation of the proposals has been secured but electronic identification will be introduced from January 2010.
Commenting, Mark Williams said:
"These plans will be deeply damaging to farmers, and I hope this debate will be an opportunity to galvanise parliamentary support against the scheme.
"I am very pleased that there is a strong cross-party campaign in the European Parliament, but it is important that the Government uses its influence in Europe to press the concerns of the UK sheep industry.
"I look forward to hearing what the Minister has to say on this issue, and I hope as many colleagues as possible will attend to show the strength of feeling against these plans."
Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs Spokesperson and Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, added:
"I am pleased that Mark Williams has managed to secure this debate as it is an important issue. I have been working on this issue and have recently tabled an EDM on the subject which is attracting Members of Parliament’s signatures.
"I have written to the Liberal Democrat Members of the European Parliament about this matter and hope to be able to take part in the debate on Wednesday."
