NEW charges imposed by Work Permits UK to process applications for Australian and New Zealand sheep shearers could have a serious impact on the UK sheep industry, according to the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC).

The NAAC's concerns over the charge of £95 for each work permit have been taken up by MPs who have written to Home Secretary David Blunkett, urging him to reconsider the new charging scheme.
"We were given no prior warning of the charge which was brought in on April 1," said Jill Hewitt, executive officer for the NAAC.
