Level 3 Apprenticeship Land-Based Service Engineering

Askham Bryan College, North Yorkshire
Course overview
An apprenticeship is a job with training. The job must have a productive purpose and should provide the apprentice with the opportunity to embed and consolidate the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need for their immediate job and future career.

As a LBSE (Land-Based Service Engineering) Technician, you will provide advanced technical support and guidance across a diverse range of plant and equipment in sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry and outdoor power.

As a technician you will typically have an understanding of the interface between machine, biological systems and the working environment for example climate, soil, plant and animals.

Those working in the Land-Based Engineering sectors work with the most technically advanced products including; GPS and telemetry, drones, robotics, autonomous vehicles and alternative fuel sources. The technology employed in the Land-based Engineering sectors meets or exceeds applications found in many other sectors.

The nature of the industry will present technical challenges ranging from simple mechanics to the diagnosis and repair of complex mechanical, electronic and telemetry systems. These operations may take place in the employer’s workplace or on the customer’s site requiring flexible working hours as dictated by seasonal requirements. Technicians may be called upon to advise customers and support work colleagues.

If you like to be constantly challenged and to work in varied environments, enjoy science, engineering or computer studies – and want to make a difference – then a career in Land-Based Engineering is the perfect choice for you.

*This does not include poultry, as there is a separate Poultry Technician apprenticeship standard for this.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be a skilled livestock technician who will continue working on farm in roles such as unit/herd/ flock manager, head stockperson, or choosing to progress to junior management through the next level apprenticeship, or you may choose further study and progress to employment in the allied industries such as breeding services, feeding/nutrition roles.
