York to host a monthly farmers market once again

The ancient city of York is to bring back a tradition that rightfully belongs at the centre of the community, a monthly farmers market.

The market will run on the first Friday of each month from 9:00am until 4:00pm and will commence on Friday 3rd February in St Sampson’s Square.

This new event will be run by the Yorkshire Farmers’ Market Group, which includes the other markets at Otley, Harrogate, Knaresborough and Wetherby.

The market will welcome quality traders selling locally and ethically sourced produce; freshly baked bread from Haxby Bakehouse, the freshest salmon from the Real Catch in Hull, venison from Round Green Farm in Barnsley, award-winning pies from Voakes Pies at Whixley, the tastiest quail, duck, hens’ eggs and goose eggs from Church View Farm Eggs, Wakefield, organic vegetables from the Organic Pantry, Tadcaster, Yorkshire cheeses from Lacey’s Cheese, Richmond and jams from the ever popular Chilli Jam Man, Malton.

Other producers will be Yorkshire Blankets, Shire Honey, Happy Hounds, Tancred Farm, Gusto Italian, Really Indian, Hel’s Bowls, Tricky Dickie’s Stickie Toffee Puddings, the Cake and Pudding Company, Town Farm Nurseries, Jane Schaffer Ceramics and Simply Elle jewellery.

'Top five farmers markets'

Peter Heald, Director of Yorkshire Farmers’ Markets, said: “Yorkshire Farmers Markets were featured in the top five farmers’ markets in the UK by the Sunday Times and we see this as an opportunity to build on the superb reputation York has for its fresh market produce.”

Julie Shearman, Church View Farm Eggs, said: “We’re seeing an increase in people buying fresh eggs straight from the farm, especially after the success of Bake Off!

“There’s no better place to buy your local produce than the regular farmers’ market and we’re looking forward to making this new market a brilliant success.

“Our saying is that ‘we don’t have customers, we have friends who buy eggs’ and we love telling our customers about different eggs you can buy and what you can cook with them.”
