Farmers in Anglesey who are low on silage following this year's extreme weather can now receive bales thanks to a farming union and a local energy company.

After a disastrous harvest earlier in the year, caused by the severe drought, the window of good weather in recent weeks has come as a lifeline for hundreds of farmers and their animals.

It has allowed desperately needed additional crops of silage to be taken ahead of the autumn and winter, but farmers are not out of the woods yet.

Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) and Horizon Nuclear Power have now teamed up to help Anglesey farmers short on winter fodder.

The energy company is donating a limited number of bales of silage from their Wylfa Newydd site.

To be eligible they will need to meet specified criteria and prove that their farm is below 250 acres.

“This is a great example of a successful company supporting farmers in their local community and I hope that those who are struggling will take up the offer,” said FUW Anglesey CEO, Alaw Jones.

Euros Jones, the FUW’s second CEO on Anglesey added: “Once the application window is closed, all bales will be shared on a pro-rata basis, based on acreage and bales will need to be collected from the site on a specified date and time. Those arrangements will be made by the FUW at the end of November. We are really grateful to have the support of Horizon.”

Applications need to be made directly through the FUW Anglesey office. Contact County Executive Officer Alaw Jones on 01248 750 250 or alaw.jones@fuw.org.uk, entries close at 5pm on Friday 19 October.
