The NFU has warned farmers and growers to get their planning applications into their local authorities before the autumn.

Planning fees were set to increase by 20% from July, but this is now expected to happen later in the year.

The increase, when it happens, will be an issue for many farmers who already pay considerable charges.

The NFU said the good news is there is a chance now to get an application submitted over the summer and pay less.

Fees for agricultural buildings are based on the floor space and range from £80 to £250,000.

It is an issue for many farmers, who can pay thousands for agents to put together applications, with local planning authority charges on top.

The government is suggesting the additional money can be used to fund planning departments and a number of local authorities have suggested they will use the money to fund new staff.

The NFU said this would be useful if farm applications are then determined more efficiently.

While the NFU cannot stop the government bringing in the fee increase, it will be lobbying further on this issue as excessive fees will put farmers off from applying for permissions.

The NFU said that simpler planning rules benefit farmers and reduce local authority workloads so they don’t need to charge more.
